Use assets, components, and templates
The Assets tab brings reusable starting points into one place: built-in templates, main components from the current file, and local color styles.
The representative video demonstrates this exact workflow: Open the Assets tab to browse templates and the local style library.
Verified result: The Assets tab is selected and shows Templates and Local styles.
Transcript
- Open AssetsChoose Assets to browse templates and the local style library.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Open the Assets tab in the left panel.
- Switch to the page where you want inserted content to appear.
- Unlock the objects you plan to turn into a component.
Templates and components are different. A template inserts a reusable block of content into the current page. A component creates linked instances whose relationship to a main component can be maintained.
Insert a template
Section titled “Insert a template”- In Assets, browse TEMPLATES or use Search templates and components.
- Use a category chip when you want to narrow the list.
- Choose a template card.
- Editor v2 inserts the template into the current page without clearing the existing canvas.
- Move the inserted content to its final position and replace placeholder text or images.
If the template is inserted on top of existing work, use Undo, pan to a clearer area, and insert it again. You can also move the new top-level layers together after insertion.
Create a reusable component
Section titled “Create a reusable component”- Select the object or sibling objects that should form the reusable design.
- Open the selection menu and choose Create component.
- Rename the new main component in Layers.
- Open Assets. The component appears under COMPONENTS with a preview when one can be generated.
Choose a component card to insert a linked instance. You can also select the main component and choose Create instance in the Component section of the Inspector.
Use components for repeated controls, cards, navigation items, or any design that should remain related to one source. Use groups when you only need objects to move together.
Edit a main component or an instance
Section titled “Edit a main component or an instance”- Select an instance and choose Go to main or Edit main component when the shared design needs to change.
- Edits to the main component update its linked instances.
- Edits made directly to an instance become local overrides when that property supports overrides.
- Choose Reset overrides to return an instance to the main component.
- Choose Push overrides to main only when the instance’s local changes should become the shared design.
- Choose Detach instance to keep the current appearance but remove the link to the main component.
Detaching is permanent as a component relationship, but you can choose Undo immediately if it was accidental.
Find and apply local styles
Section titled “Find and apply local styles”The Local styles card summarizes the color, text, and effect styles stored in the file. Available color styles appear as swatches below it.
- Select one editable object.
- Choose a color-style swatch.
- The style is applied to the selection’s fill.
If a swatch appears to do nothing, make sure a compatible object is selected and unlocked.
Recover from a missing or unexpected asset
Section titled “Recover from a missing or unexpected asset”- Clear the search field and choose All if no matching template or component appears.
- If COMPONENTS is empty, select objects and choose Create component first.
- If a component preview is blank, use its name to identify it; preview generation can fail without removing the component itself.
- If an instance no longer has its main component, select the instance and choose Recover as main component when that action is available.
- If an instance changed unexpectedly, use Reset overrides for local changes or inspect the main component for shared changes.
- Choose Undo after an accidental template insertion, component creation, instance detach, or override push.
Current limitations
Section titled “Current limitations”- The Components section lists main components from the current file. It does not browse components from other files or remote team libraries.
- Choosing a template inserts content into the current page; it does not create a separate file or clear the page.
- The Local styles area exposes a summary and up to eight color swatches. Full text-style and effect-style browsing is not available in this tab.
- Component edits require an editable file. Locked, hidden, missing-main, and view-only states can disable structural actions.
